The Arriaga Theater ("Teatro Arriaga") is an opera house in Bilbao. The theater was built in 1890 in Neo-Baroque style by architect Joaquín Rucoba. Rucoba was the same architect who designed Bilbao's City Hall and was partly inspired by the Paris Opera House.
The enormously beautiful theater building with the necessary Renaissance elements is named after the musician and composer Juan Crisostomo de Arriaga, who in his time was also known as the "Spanish Mozart". Arriaga wrote his first opera at age 13 and died of tuberculosis shortly before his 20th birthday. The Arriaga Theater was rebuilt in 1985 after the severe damage caused by a heavy flood in August 1983.
