The Engeln village linden tree, which has long shaped the townscape, is also called Friedenslinde. The tree was planted in 1913 to commemorate 100 years after the end of the Battle of Leipzig, this war against Napoleon, which was fought by around 600,000 soldiers and left an identity-forming effect on the Germans. In Leipzig it was the colossal monument to the Battle of the Nations, in the other regions of young Germany there were countless peace linden trees that were planted to remind future generations of the event.
