Provincial flood area Molenbeekse Plassen

The area around the Molenbeek underwent a true metamorphosis in 2011. From a vacant, neglected site, it gradually changed into a beautiful piece of nature with a floodable zone that better protects the environment and especially the area upstream of the Park van Boom against flooding.

In addition to protection against flooding, the flood zone also offers space for nature. The area has since been furnished with local trees and shrubs. A 600-metre-long hiking trail with a slight incline runs around the buffer basin, an ideal route for a jogging session in a setting of swampy pools, reed beds and unique (because of extinction) Flemish dairy sheep. Those sheep keep the grassland within limits in an environmentally friendly way. The province works together with a local sheep farmer for this.
