Giuseppe De Maria, also known as Don Pippo, had to create a new creation in the early 1930s on the occasion of a surprise visit from Prince Umberto, the result is the Tartufo di Pizzo.Giuseppe De Maria's nephews, who run the Dante and Ercole gelaterias in the center of Pizzo, claim the original recipe.

The tartufo in its current form was created in Pizzo, in the Bar Dante (ca. 1952), by chance: after the wedding of two wealthy locals, Don Pippo realized that he had run out of molds to make the gelato and could no longer supply them to numerous guests. So he tried to solve the problem by putting small portions of hazelnut gelato and chocolate gelato in the palm of his hand and putting some melted chocolate inside. He then wrapped everything in sugar paper and thus the well-known tartufo mold was created, which he then left to cool. The success of the preparation brought him immediate fame. The original recipe is still appreciated by De Maria's relatives.
