The tartufo in its current form was created in Pizzo, in the Bar Dante (ca. 1952), by chance: after the wedding of two wealthy locals, Don Pippo realized that he had run out of molds to make the gelato and could no longer supply them to numerous guests. So he tried to solve the problem by putting small portions of hazelnut gelato and chocolate gelato in the palm of his hand and putting some melted chocolate inside.
