Built in Baroque style in the historic center of the city in the 16th century on top of a pre-existing church, the place of worship is dedicated to San Giorgio Martire and to the Virgin Mary, as is engraved on the architrave of the beautiful Baroque portal dating back to 1632. Inside the church you can see a statue attributed to Pietro Bernini and the funerary plaque of Gioacchino Murat, who is buried in the basement of the church, where he was buried after his death by firing squad in the local castle. The church also houses the remains of Antonino Anile, a scholar, anatomist and Minister of Education of the Kingdom of Italy, originally from Pizzo.
