The Oberzell monastery was founded in 1126 by Norbert von Xanten. In the 19th century, the Koenig & Bauer printing machine factory was built on the site of the secularized monastery. Today the motherhouse of the Oberzell Franciscan Sisters (servants of the holy childhood of Jesus) is located here. Parts of the site are available to the Montessori school.

The Premonstratensian monastery Oberzell was founded by Saint Norbert von Xanten (Archbishop of Magdeburg from 1126 to 1134) in 1126 and was consecrated to Saint Michael. According to legend, Norbert von Xanten had celebrated an Easter mass in Würzburg Cathedral when a blind woman who was there was seeing again. Thereupon a wealthy Würzburg brothers named Johannes and Heinrich donated farm and vineyards in exchange with Bishop Embricho to provide an area in Zell for the foundation of the monastery. Johannes himself was canon in Würzburg and became the first provost of the monastery. In 1128 the monastery was confirmed by Bishop Embricho. From 1141, the rule of the order required a separation of the previous joint male and female monastery. However, an explicit mention of the own women's monastery Unterzell is only documented for the year 1218. Between 1159 and 1351 the monastery Tückelhausen near Ochsenfurt was subordinate to the abbey.
