The Boyana Church stands in a garden behind high stone walls. It grows, among other things, cypresses and coastal sequoias, which were planted in 1905 by botanical owner Ferdinand I.

It is thanks to his wife, Queen Eleonora, that the Boyana Church still exists. At the beginning of the 20th century, this church should have made way for a new and larger church. For the new church to be built, the Queen gave the inhabitants of Boyana another piece of land so that this church could remain. By the way, the queen is buried in the garden.

The church gained the status of UNESCO World Heritage because of the beautiful wall paintings in late Byzantine style. Beautiful to look at, but taking pictures is not allowed because of the light and humidity.

You can only visit the church in small groups for 10 minutes.
