Housesteads Roman Fort was thought to have been built around AD 124 and formed an important part of Emperor Hadrian's Wall. Today, the site is owned by the National Trust and managed by English Heritage. You can explore the remains of the barracks and hospital, though you'll need to buy a ticket.

The remains can also be admired from afar from the Hadrian's Wall Path National Trail. The visitor centre is a good parking option for the start of a hike in the area.

A fantastic fort along Hadrian's Wall, some really good information here and the visitor center has good facilities.

As a member of the National Trust, there is no admission charge. The small museum at the fort gives a good description of the fort, its construction and the living conditions in the Roman period.
