The Altona Balcony is located directly on Palmaille, a street running along the Elbe bank, whose name is derived from the Italian ball game pallamaglio. In 1638, a facility lined with four rows of trees was built on this spot for this then-popular sport. Today, however, as in many Hamburg parks, you can observe citizens enjoying a leisurely game of boules. The area surrounding the vantage point is lined with numerous opulent mansions and villas from the 18th to 20th centuries. Today, they are mostly used by companies, government offices, consulates, or upscale restaurants, although they are not exactly privately owned. Also nearby is Altona Town Hall, including the registry office, and the Altona Balcony and its backdrop often serve as a photo backdrop for newlyweds. In addition to Gerhard Brandes' 1968 bronze sculpture "Fisherman," the Altona Balcony also features mobile artworks, including a small box containing a camera obscura, which is currently only open for a limited time. Inside the approximately 3 x 3-meter black box, approximately five people can simultaneously experience the sensational view of the Elbe River in a moving image projection. Furthermore, the image of the Elbe captured here is transmitted live to the foyer of the Altona Museum and projected onto the wall.
