Pfaffenhausen was probably founded around the year 800 by monks (priests). The place is first mentioned in writing as "Phafenhusun" in 1059, in a document about the wild ban of Emperor Heinrich IV.

Until 1313, Pfaffenhausen belonged to the lords of Jazza, who resided in neighboring Burgjoss. They sold this property to Kurmainz in 1541.
Pfaffenhausen was not spared during the Thirty Years' War. Arson, looting and the plague caused the population to drop dramatically. Only about 15 families are said to have survived. In 1700 the town had around 120 inhabitants again, and in 1712 a small chapel was even built. It stood on the place where the school was later built and where today there is a small department store.

In 1725 a large part of the village including the chapel burned down. The village had to be completely rebuilt except for about three houses, and the aforementioned school took the place of the chapel. After the wars of liberation against Napoleon, Pfaffenhausen belonged to Bavaria after the Peace of Paris in 1814. At that time, agriculture and animal husbandry were the only sources of income apart from the use of wood from the Spessart forest. In 1866 there was another change of ownership, the village now belonged to Prussia with the district office of Orb and Gersfeld. In 1921, funded by donations, a new church was built.

The communities of Pfaffenhausen, Oberndorf and Burgjoss voluntarily merged on December 31, 1971 as part of the regional reform of the state of Hesse to form the large community "Jossatal". On July 1, 1974, they were followed by the municipality of Lettgenbrunn by virtue of state law. This was accompanied by another change of name to the community "Jossgrund".
