The Monument of the Bulgarian Tsar Samuil (997-1014) in Sofia was opened on June 8, 2015 on the occasion of the 1000 anniversary of the death of the great Bulgarian ruler. It is located in the center of the city, in the garden front of the basilica "St. Sofia". The statue was opened officialy - honors guards, brass band and a solemn religious ceremony performed by the Bulgarian Patriarch Neophyte. This is the first monument of the Bulgarian king in the capital city.
The statue is work of the sculptor Alexander Haytov and was designed by Rosen Gurkov and Mariya Gurkova. Funds for the monument are donation by the foundation "Bulgarian Memory" chaired by Dr. Milen Vrabevski.
The monument represents a 4-foot bronze statue of Samuil, with a crown, patriarchal scepter in his right hand and a sword in the left hand.
Part of the artistic idea of the author is creation of the eyes by a special material so they to shining in the dark. That, and the location of the memorial sparked much debate and controversy among the Bulgarian society, even before the official opening.
