Best Mountain Biking Routes to Norman Cathedral of Naro

Tips

  • It was built in 1089 by Ruggero D'Altavilla above a pre-existing Arab mosque shortly after the Norman conquest of Naro in 1086 and was dedicated to Maria Santissima Assunta degli Angeli. It was raised to the status of Mother Church, by Gualtiero Offmill Archbishop of Palermo, in 1174, the year in which the Orthodox rite was abandoned in the Church of San Nicolò di Bari. In 1266 (the second Sunday of May) it was consecrated to the Virgin Annunziata, to presence of Cardinal Rodolfo, Bishop of Albano and apostolic legate of Pope Clement IV, together with the archbishops of Palermo and Bari and the bishops of Agrigento, Mazara and Patti. At the end of the 14th century he obtained the title of Cathedral from King Martino The Younger. The entrance portal dates back to the Chiaramonte period and has a characteristic pointed arch resting on a group of fourteen columns, richly modulated and decorated with zigzags and palmettes. The interior was totally renovated.source: FAI

  • The Naro Cathedral is located in the most ancient part of the city of Naro. before being a cathedral it was a mosque, in fact the entrance portal is identical to the portal of the castle hall. from up there you can enjoy a beautiful panorama
