The moated castle "Haus zum Haus" is located on the northern edge of the city of Ratingen, nestled in an idyllic pasture landscape and surrounded by picturesque moats.

It is one of the few well-preserved medieval fortified castles in this region. Today, in addition to the architects' studio and other offices, the core castle is home to the headquarters of the Kulturstiftung Wasserburg zum Haus.

The buildings in the outer bailey are used for residential purposes, sometimes by young musicians who can practice there without hindrance. In 2005 the former barn was converted into a concert hall.

The castle complex is privately owned by Dr. Christa Lambart. The path through the outer bailey and the inner courtyard are open to interested visitors and walkers every day.

    story

Two important trade routes crossed near the Anger and found a transition through the swamp area here. Already in the 9th century a "motte", a palisade castle made of wood, was built here. The origins of today's main castle with the striking towers date back to the year 1276, when the "Zum Haus" family built a fortified complex at the same time as the city of Ratingen was founded and gave the "fortified house" its idiosyncratic name. Johann zum Haus became Marshal of the Duchy of Berg in 1447 and continued to expand the seat. With the changes in weapon technology and the type of warfare, there was a general change from the fortified castle to more comfortable castle palaces or later to the representative palace complexes. Ratingen Castle was also rebuilt in the 16th and 17th centuries to make living conditions a little more comfortable. In addition, the outer bailey with the Rentmeisterhaus, stables and farm buildings was added within the second ring wall. These additions bear clear Gothic and Renaissance features with stone window mullions and stepped gables. However, since there were obviously not enough funds available to emulate the French castle architecture, the defensive character of the castle was essentially retained.

After an eventful history, several changes of ownership and years of decay, the architect Bruno Lambart took over the castle complex in 1973, restored all parts of the building and laid out the outdoor facilities. The architect's achievements in the preservation of historical monuments have received several awards (e.g. as an exemplary building in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, BDA prize, Rheinlandtaler from the Rhineland Regional Council).

A beautiful old castle complex, which in times after Corona with cultural events invite you to visit again. A place from another time

Very old "masonry" with locality. Is always used as a photo opportunity. Super well maintained facility.
