Construction of the Hanstholm Fortress bunker complex began immediately after the German occupation of Denmark in 1940. Construction continued on the bunker complex until the end of World War II, ultimately encompassing three bunker complexes. From there, the Germans intended to control shipping in the Skagerrak. To this end, three bunker complexes with six batteries were installed by the end of the war, which are open to visitors today. The Hanstholm bunker complex was considered bomb-proof, especially against possible chemical weapons attacks.
