Since 1839, the bronze monument to the poet Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805), a student at the Stuttgart Military Academy from 1773 to 1780, has stood on Schillerplatz, formerly the Old Palace Square. Designed by the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1768-1844), it was erected on Schillerplatz, the former Alter Schlossplatz. On May 9, 1825, members of the Stuttgart "Liederkranz," an association of art-loving citizens of the city, commemorated the 20th anniversary of the death of Friedrich Schiller, the most popular and celebrated German poet at the time.
