The Erechtheion - the graceful temple of the famous Caryatids on the north side of the sacred rock of the Acropolis was built in 421-406 BC to replace an earlier temple dedicated to Athena. Its unusual shape is due, on the one hand, to the irregularity of the terrain - there is a height difference of three meters between east and west - and, on the other hand, to the numerous cults that it was intended to accommodate.
It is not known why the ancient Greeks decided to bring so many cult elements under one roof and create a multifunctional building.
