Picturesquely situated on the city wall, the roof covered in ivy, visitors to Bernau will find a single, old house near the place where the mill gate stood until 1884. This is the hangman's house, the former executioner's house in Bernau. Hence the three gallows birds on the signpost, and why the house is so secluded, because who would want to live next door to the hangman, especially since he also had to fulfill the duties of the knacker in 40 surrounding communities.
