    Josefsberg Parish Church and Vicarage

A rare testimony to everyday life around 200 years ago can be found in the dining room of the Josefsberg Vicarage. Around 1830, Pastor Chrystostomos Sandweger painted the work and life of the woodcutters from the Ötscher region on the walls of the vicarage. The Josefsberg parish is inseparably linked to the people in this area. The drawn woodcutters are brought to life by the intense stories that are conveyed during a guided tour.

      Josefsberg Parish Church

The parish church "Zum hl. Josef" (St. Joseph), located at 1026 m above sea level, is the highest in Lower Austria. Josefsberg is one of the "three holy mountains" (along with Annasberg and Joachimsberg) on the Via Sacra, the traditional pilgrimage route to Mariazell. In 1645, a small church was built in place of the hermitage, which has been adapted several times. The high altar is a monumental baroque column structure with sacrificial portals. It bears a Nazarene altarpiece "Flight to Egypt", which J. Krepp painted in 1857. In the pilgrimage church, a mighty stone offering box with forged iron bands from the 17th century is striking. The wooden baptismal font is said to have come to Josefsberg from the abandoned church of St. Johann in der Wüste. The organ in the neo-baroque case was built by Franz Capek in 1888. In the connecting wing to the rectory there is a memorial plaque from the k.k. Iron foundry near Mariazell. The rectory was built between 1786 and 1791. The dining room is decorated with frescoes by the Cistercian Father Chrysostomos Sandweger, who was a pastor here around 1830. They depict the work of the woodcutters in great detail.
