Since there was a great need for wood, the forest in the Eyterbruch was almost completely cut down around 1600. The forest-free areas were now used as meadows. The farmers had to be able to drive on the meadows to harvest hay. Initial measures were taken to improve drainage in this swampy area, but they were not very successful: the eyterbruch remained muddy and the farmers' hay harvest often literally fell into the water. Some of the hay wagons sank up to the axles in the mud. In 1719 the first plan for systematic drainage was presented.
