1951 Dedication of the Lutheran Church in BuirIn the predominantly Catholic area on the left bank of the Rhine, individual Protestant communities only survived under special conditions. It was only after the Prussians took over the Rhineland in 1815 that immigration led to the founding of further diaspora communities. As late as 1885, a proportion of 1-2% Protestants in the population of individual places was considered remarkable. Only after the turn of the 20th century did it increase rapidly as a result of the industrial boom and new immigrants. After the Second World War it increased further. In 1950, 13.5% of Kerpen residents were Protestant, 81.3% Catholic.
