The Alster the heart of Hamburg
Round trips on the Binnenalster and Außenalster as well as walks around the waters are very popular with locals and tourists. Sunsets on the outer Alster lend a romantic flair and the adjacent attractions are worth a visit.Worth knowing about the Alster
The most influential of the Elbe waters of Hamburg consists of several sections. The source of the Alster springs in the town of Henstedt-Rhen outside of Hamburg. In the north of the city, the course of the river reaches the Hanseatic city, before it rises at the Krugkoppelbrücke in the Outer Alster. After Kennedy and Lombardsbrücke, the river finally presents itself as Binnenalster and flows as Kleine Alster and Alsterfleet in the Elbe.
In general parlance, the Outer Alster is often referred to as Lake or Alster Lake. But by definition this is not quite correct, because the Alster is a river there as well - albeit dammed up. That's how it started with this special water area in the heart of Hamburg. From 1235, the Alster was dammed up at the height of today's Jungfernstieges by the so-called "Oberdamm" to operate mills, which developed in the following decades and centuries of the "Alster Lake".
