The Kempen Canal - Dessel Schoten Canal was dug in the period 1844 - 1846. Inland shipping penetrated into the Noorderkempen. Along the shore where you can now walk or mountain bike recreationally, a strip used to be provided for ship hunting. This heavy work was carried out by humans or animals. The perfect combination was the horse and the donkey. To make the hard labor more bearable, trees were planted to provide shade strips above the towpath.
