The name of the Koliburg Castle goes back to the builders of the Kohler family, the mayor of Endingen. In the literature, the Burgstgelle is also named Üsenburg. However, the name Üsenburg is not appropriate for this castle! New research shows that the Üsenburg was located north of Breisach.

In 1321, the Lords of Üsenberg, with the help of the citizens of Endingen, destroy the Koliburg above the town. From the Koliburg, the family (Kohler) of the lords of Endingen held the office of bailiff and mayor. Only a few remains of the walls of the castle are visible in the area. Trench structures are still visible in the terrain from the castle site.
Remarkable is the large southern moat, which is very wide and deep and secured the castle against the steeply rising terrain to the south. The remains of the existing masonry indicate that a small, heavily developed castle must have stood here. There was probably a keep on the southern high plateau.

Greetings, Hans-Jürgen van Akkeren. Honorary representative of the Archaeological Monument Preservation BW.

According to the monument protection law, the area of the Koliburg is designated as an excavation protection area. Any private excavation or inspection with a metal detector is prohibited!
