Chiusdino is a district town about 30 km south of Siena.
Our holiday village Pentolina belongs to this district. In the Tuscan hills you start from Pentolina at a height of just over 400m with a beautiful view over the Feccia valley, which is about 200m lower. A small pass road leads over the Montebello and then past the Frosini castle. After crossing the Feccia river, the road climbs again to Chiusdino, which is 700m high.
The medieval village from the 12th to 15th century is, like many others, built on the top of a mountain. At the very top there is of course a church, in this case "San Michele Arcangelo".
Just around the corner you will find the birthplace of San Galgano. Down in the valley (about 10km further) are the outer walls of the former cathedral "San Galgano", the rest is in ruins. You can visit the remains of the church of San Galgano. In summer, opera evenings are held there because of the excellent acoustics. A few hundred meters away, on a hill, you will find the saint's burial chapel. It is a round building with an impressive dome. The view from there of the beautiful landscape is particularly beautiful.
The streets in Chiusdino are very narrow, sometimes very steep, sometimes only accessible via stairs. To the south, the houses are built on steeply sloping cliffs. Where this type of protection is lacking, there were and sometimes still are city walls.

I think Chiusdino is a charming medieval village that deserves a mention in the travel guides. But there are so many of this kind in Tuscany and even more so in the whole of Italy... --- A few dozen fall through the cracks.

That's good too: then you can enjoy them without having to share the space with thousands of admirers, like in Pisa, Arezzo or San Giminiano.

Chiusdino is a beautiful medieval village located in the Merse Valley among the Metalliferous Hills. Its origins date back to the Lombard domination of Tuscany between 568 and 569.

The town still retains its medieval appearance and some sections of the double city walls. It is also possible to find medieval houses, including the alleged house of San Galgano (Galgano Guidotti), where the saint is believed to have been born around 1150.
