The seaside district: after the construction of the railway at the end of the 19th century, which links Mers-Les-Bains to Paris, exclusive tourism from Paris is booming. It was very trendy at the time to take baths in the sea. Along the coast, the new seaside district has all the characteristics of the heyday. Wealthy Parisians and other aristocrats built their second homes here, usually in an Art Nouveau style characterized by metal or wood or iron balconies and round-shaped bay windows, colorful facades and exuberant ornaments. The Franco-Dutch architect Eduard Johan Niermans (1859-1928), (born in Enschede, in 1895 he obtained French nationality), designed several houses in the district between 1899 and 1907. The district still has around 300 villas in this area. era and was largely designated in 1986 as a remarkable heritage site. At the end of July and the beginning of August, the feast of the bathers is celebrated there, with hundreds of people dressed in the fashion of the beautiful era.

Outstanding ensemble of well-maintained period villas lining the coastal waterfront.

The seaside district, the seafront promenade and adjoining streets are best explored on foot. The houses are in a clearly visible chronological order: closest to the cliff are the simplest and oldest houses, while the most recent 'country houses' are more towards Le Tréport. The beautiful architectural ensemble of some 400 luxury villas from the Belle Epoque has been declared a 'protected sector'. The houses show all kinds of styles, but Art Nouveau is especially prominent. The facades show great imagination; awning roofs, (bell) turrets, bay windows, loggias, balconies of wrought iron or wood, ceramic motifs.
