Straeten falls into the narrow zone of street villages on the lower Rur, which runs east-northeast from Sittard to Mönchengladbach. A whole line of street villages even begins with Straeten: Straeten, Scheifendahl, Aphoven, Lieck, Högden, Lümbach and Vinn. Here the streets, which mostly lie in furrows in the land, are pushed together in one or two rows, so that the village has the character of a street village on one side or in the middle, while on the other side or at the end the farms are further apart.
This is also the case with Straeten, which stretches 3 km in an S-shape along an old dry valley in a row of houses that is partly in one row and partly in two rows across the main terrace. In earlier times the area was a dense forest and heath area.

A "new" wayside cross near Straeten im Feld. The tree has grown, a hedge has been added as a windbreak, and the bench is also there – a place to pause and reflect in the middle of the fields.

The name Straeten is mentioned in a document from 1409. In this document, a Goswin von der Straeten is referred to as a lay judge of the Hagbank thingy before the Hagen. Judicial law lay with the Lords of Heinsberg, the jury office was tied to certain courts. One of these courts was the Kapitelshof or Straetener Hof. It was owned by the Heinsberg lords, then owned by the monastery dean Wilhelm von Blankenberg (1379-1382), later owned by Eberhard von Elsum.
