In 1545 the church of unknown age received a tower. In 1736 it was hit so hard by lightning that the bells in the tower melted. In 1786 the church was demolished down to the tower and a so-called barn church was built. Although the church was enlarged, there was not enough space. In 1899/1900 a new building was erected according to the plans of Lambert von Fisenne from Gelsenkirchen. On August 22, 1900 was the solemn consecration. On October 28, 1944, the tower was completely destroyed in a bomb attack and the church was badly damaged. The damage to the church was repaired by mid-1949. The construction work was carried out under the direction of Wilhelm Andermahr from Wassenberg. In 1983 the sanctuary was rebuilt according to plans by Jakob Cüppers from Waldenrath. The altar was consecrated on May 1, 1983.
Together with other parishes, St. Nikolaus today forms the community of parishes (GdG) Heinsberg-Waldfeucht in the diocese of Aachen.
