The only thing left of the Bethania Monastery in Zoutleeuw is part of the stable wing. And apart from the monastery itself, there is this chapel, built by order of the sisters in 1659 and named, like the monastery, after Bethany, the birthplace of Mary Magdalene (patroness of that monastery founded in the fifteenth century).

Description: Well-preserved example of a rural votive chapel, dedicated to Mary, built in 1659 by the Bethania Monastery of Zoutleeuw in traditional brick and sandstone style on a square plan with a tented roof. Characteristic of this small chapel is not only the compact square shape, but also the unique, isolated location in a virtually untouched Gete valley.

This brick and sandstone chapel with a square plan and a tented roof in natural slate is located at the intersection of the Oude Kassei with the Kruisveldstraat, at a bridge over the Kleine Gete. The compact volume is emphasized by the high natural stone substructure that reaches the door lintel at the front, heavy corner chains and a profiled cornice. A surrounding bacon layer in the front facade also functions as a lintel for the door flanked by two barred windows. Apart from the brick oculi in the side facades, the other facades are blind. A slate-covered canopy protects the visitor from rain. In a framed facade stone above the door is the chronogram Consolatrix afflictorum, ora pro nobis - LauDI MarIae, BethanIa feCIt and the year of construction '1659'.

The interior space, with exposed brickwork, is covered with a cross vault. The original statue of Mary was removed by the former owners and replaced by Our Lady of Pellevoisin. Furthermore, the chapel currently contains a Saint Therese of the Child Jesus and a Child Jesus of Prague.

In 1975 the chapel was completely renovated and surrounded by a cobblestone path. In 1994 the wooden door was destroyed by thieves and replaced by a metal one.

The Bethany Chapel was built in 1659 by the nuns of Bethania in honor of Mary, Comforter of the Afflicted.

The Chapel is located along the old road from Zoutleeuw to Tienen and the landscape around the chapel has changed little over the past few hundred years.

Folktale: You bring a ribbon to hang on the chapel. You take the ribbon from the previous person. You give the ribbon to the sick person and he will be cured.
