Here, flying units such as Jagdgeschwader 53 ("Pik-As") or Jagdgeschwader 301, which operated using the Wilde-Sau method, were stationed. The airfield also served as an important base for German night fighters. Even at the time of the invasion of Normandy, fighters remained stationed here, while practically all other units were relocated to France.
