Flight units such as the Jagdgeschwader 53 ("Pik-As") or the Jagdgeschwader 301, which operated using the Wilde-Sau procedure, were stationed here. The airfield also served as an important entry point for German night fighters. Even at the time of the invasion of Normandy, hunters remained stationed here, while otherwise practically all units were relocated to France.
