The Marchfeld is a fertile plain east of Vienna. Due to intensive irrigation, the groundwater level dropped. For this reason, Danube water was tapped north of Vienna and routed in an open canal to the Rußbach.

The canal was designed ecologically, so that even beavers live there, and equipped with accompanying footpaths and cycle paths.
