Mentioned in 945 as Formiciara Castle.
Bought by Duke Sigmund in 1473 and renamed Sigmundskron Castle.
In 1976 the semi-ruin was partially restored and an inn opened.
In 1996 the castle became the property of the South Tyrolean state administration.
In 2003, Reinhold Messner received a concession to use it as a mountain museum.
In 2006 a Neolithic tomb was discovered - 6000-7000 years old. (from Wikipedia)

On November 17, 1957, around 35,000 South Tyroleans from all valleys and parts of the country gathered at Sigmundskron Castle. They protested for more rights. The castle has become a symbol of South Tyrol's autonomy. Reinhold Messner, who was born in Brixen in 1944, therefore shows a great connection to this castle in his homeland.
