No matter where you ride, there's always a solution for cyclists here in South Tyrol. Great view of the river from the bridge.

Sigmundskron Castle (also Firmian, Italian Castel Firmiano)

Southwest of Bozen, above the small village of Frangarto in the municipality of Eppan, Sigmundskron Castle towers on a porphyry rock, one of the largest castle complexes in South Tyrol. The original name "Formigar" comes from the Latin "formicaria". It is one of the oldest known names of a castle in South Tyrol. The building was first mentioned under this name around 945 AD, later the name was changed to "Firmian". The Italian name of Sigmundskron is still Firmiano.

Owned by the Bishop of Trent since 1027, the complex passed to Sigmund "the Rich in Coins", the sovereign of Tyrol, in 1473. It was only at this time that the castle received its current name "Schloss Sigmundskron". The castle also owes its name to its shape, as the broad complex is reminiscent of a crown (Sigmund's crown). The castle is also a political symbol for many South Tyroleans, since the "Los von Trento" took place here in 1957, a large popular rally under Silvius Magnago to demand independent autonomy and to protest against the failure to comply with the Paris Agreement.
