View of Castel Firmiano (Schloss Sigmundskron)

A little off the cycle route is Sigmundskron Castle on a reddish shimmering porphyry rock. The medieval castle ruins have housed one of the Messner Mountain Museums since 2006. Here Messner wants to show what the mountain does to people. It's about the history and art of mountaineering.

If you are looking for a change from the monotonous Adige Valley cycle path, you can make a detour on the South Tyrolean Wine Road to Eppan, Lake Caldaro and Tramin in just a few kilometers. A bike path takes you on an old railway line through vineyards and orchards with great views.

The bike path to or from Bolzano leads directly below the castle. We had no time to stop, but next time it's scheduled
