The Arctic got its name from a star constellation:
"Arktos" - is the Greek word for "bear". The North Star is the brightest star in the constellation "Lesser Bear" and lies almost vertically over the North Pole.

The Arctic itself is not a landmass, but a frozen sea surrounded by continents. Within the Arctic Circle are large parts of Greenland, the island of Spitsbergen and the northern regions of Alaska, Canada, Norway and Russia. The Arctic region is defined by the northern end of the tree line.

The Arctic is much warmer than the South Pole. The average annual temperature is - 18°C.

Unlike Antarctica, the northern polar region has a wide variety of land mammals. They are part of the diet of the indigenous people who have called the Arctic Circle home for thousands of years.
