Friedrich Spee von Langenfeld was a German Jesuit, theologian and poet who was born in Kaiserswerth in 1591. He is known for his sharp criticism of the witch trials, which he expressed in his work "Cautio Criminalis"2. This work was one of the first Catholic works to speak out against torture and the persecution of witches.

Spee was also an important hymn writer and wrote numerous spiritual songs that are still included in the "Gotteslob" today. His works, such as the "Golden Book of Virtues" and the "Trutznachtigall", are important contributions to the religious literature of the 17th century.
