The museum was composed mainly of buildings from villages that were flooded due to the construction of the Liptovská Mara dam, especially from Liptovská Mara. Organizationally, the Liptov Village Museum belongs to the Liptov Museum (Slovak Liptovské múzeum) based in Ružomberok.
