The Galleries of the Academy were born in 1750, when the Venetian Republic decided to give the city an Academy of painters and sculptors. The first director was the painter Giovanni Battista Piazzetta and he was in the "Fonteghetto della Farina" building, which is currently the Harbor Master's Office, shortly before reaching the San Marco Pier.
