The Church of the Madonna dell'Orto is located in the Cannaregio sestiere. It owes its name to a statue of the Virgin and Child that was found in a nearby garden (ortho is garden in Italian).

It is one of the most important churches in Venice, where the remains of Tintoretto are found.

In 1350 the Order of the Humiliates built a church, which was dedicated to St. Christopher, and founded a monastery. In 1377 a Gothic church was built with donations; The occasion was the transfer of a miraculous statue of the Madonna that had been found in a nearby garden (orto). The church itself was completed around 1400, but the facade could only be completed between 1460 and 1464.

The monastery came to the Canon Regulars of San Giorgio in Alga after the Humiliates had been expelled. After its dissolution in 1669, it was acquired by the Cistercian monks who originally lived in the monastery of San Tommaso dei Borgognoni (Torcello) and stayed there until the end of the republic (1797).
