The rune stones of Haithabu are valuable historical documents whose meaning lies in the fact that the early history of southern Denmark from the time before and after the Danish unification can be linked to real events. The purpose of rune stones is to convey to posterity the memory of important men. The erection of such memorial stones is therefore limited to a social circle. The four rune stones referring to the city of Haithabu are exhibited in the Viking Museum Haithabu and are divided into two groups, the "Sigtryggsteine" and the "Svensteine".
