In the Fichtelgebirge, the watersheds of the Danube and Elbe, of the Elbe and Rhine and of the Rhine and Danube meet in one point, a triple point. This is located northeast of the Seehaus on the ridge that moves from the Platte to the Nusshardt.

The European main watershed is the dividing line between the catchment areas of the Atlantic, North Sea and Baltic on the one hand and the Mediterranean and Black Sea on the other. It starts at Gibraltar and comes to Germany via Spain, France and Switzerland. Here it separates the catchment areas from the Danube and Rhine, comes via Kirchenlaibach (train station) into the Fichtelgebirge and runs over the Kreuzstein, the Ochsenkopf and the Seehaus car park to the triple point mentioned. It leaves the Fichtelgebirge as a dividing line between the catchment areas of the Danube and Elbe via the Silberhaus, the Kßeine and the Steinwald.

        What is a watershed?

A watershed - or more precisely: a watershed line (as opposed to a watershed point) - is the boundary between two neighboring river systems. It therefore corresponds to the boundary between the catchment areas of the runoff rainwater from two rivers. A distinction must be made between above-ground and underground watersheds.
