Temple de Motiers
From the Catholic Church of Notre-Dame to the Protestant Temple
In 1538, the inhabitants of Môtiers tried to oppose the installation of granaries in the Saint-Pierre church, but it was the former parish of Notre-Dame that was saved. It is then stripped of all furniture reminiscent of the ancient cult. It becomes a Protestant temple and then crosses the sixteenth century and the first half of the seventeenth without interventions other than maintenance works and minor transformations. It serves as a place of worship for the parishioners of Môtiers.
The temple underwent a new moult in the second half of the seventeenth century. In 1654, the municipal authorities of the four owner villages decided to end the burials inside the building and to renovate the floor. In 1668, the demolition of the old Saint-Pierre bell tower and its replacement with a sturdy bell tower attached to the temple gave the building a renewed silhouette. The new bell tower, made according to the plans of Jonas Favre, is recognized in 1671, although it bears the year 1669. Ten years later, the Municipality of Môtiers commissioned the same architect to rebuild the choir, whose walls showed dangerous cracks. Despite its date, the apse is rebuilt in the Gothic tradition. The turn of the century was marked by a renovation of the interior in 1696 and the establishment of a gallery in 1704. In 1715 the temple was chosen to house the municipal archives until lack of space forced the city to build a small one in 1777-1780 Annex to build in the north. The cemetery was moved north of the building in 1808.
