Here you can see the remains of the former gate tower in the lower alley.The village entrances were protected by thick wooden gates. The tower stood next to the road (see walls).The village had three gate towers.By 1796, only two towers were still marked on a map.The third tower, facing the Rothenburg region, had already been demolished.On Napoleon's orders, the towers in the Landwehr were demolished.This means that we must assume that both towers were demolished starting in 1806.
Stones from the tower may have been used for the gatekeeper's house, which was built later.

A feeding station for the horses was built into the tower wall. The horses were tied there to clarify details with the customs officers before being admitted.
