I didn't feel the way was that bad. With my 32 tires I was able to travel the path very quickly. Mostly fine gravel (October 2022).
Since the path runs very much in the forest and you can enjoy the beautiful views when driving slowly, I recommend driving the route uphill from north to south.
Anyone who wants to ride a "proper" road bike should stay on the road. Highly recommended for a little indulgence in between, but also with a racing bike.
But I would prefer to stay on the road going downhill from south to north, because the road runs nice and quickly downhill.

the only alternative route seems to be the Oberstetten-Schrozberg road
