The entire Rehberger Graben can be driven very well. At individual stations, the design and function of the trench are always explained. It belongs to the Upper Harz water shelf, the World Heritage Site.

A first version of the Rehberger Graben was built between 1602 and 1604, about 30 m above the current ditch. It was a purely wooden channel construction made from 9.6 m (5 fathoms) long and 68 cm (28 inches) wide segments. Since the wood had to be constantly replaced and the ditch often dried out in summer and froze in winter, construction of the current ditch began in 1699 according to the measurements of Christian Zacharias Koch. In 1694, Judge Meyer suggested finally driving through the deep watercourse in order to reach the waters of the Oder.

The (new) Rehberger Graben was completed on October 11, 1703, but changes and improvements were made regularly in the following years. The ditch was systematically walled and partially covered with boulders that were extracted during blasting work, thus protecting around 35% of its length from being buried and winter frost. The Rehberger ditch is a very durable structure that still functions unchanged today with very little maintenance.

The ditch structure was given a uniform gradient of around 5 ‰ over kilometers and thus has a height difference of 37 m over its entire length of 7.2 km.
