The Hildesheim port and the Hildesheim branch canal, which connects it to the Mittelland Canal, were officially opened on June 20, 1928 after more than eight years of construction. At the same time, the port operating company, which had been founded in 1925, began work.Immediately after the opening, the port and the canal were used mainly to load and ship waterborne goods (coal, ore, potash, salt, sugar) and general cargo (lots of cargo in boxes, barrels and sacks). In the 1950s to 1970s, the bulk cargo was still mainly potash salts, building materials and coal. Today, however, the types of goods are more widely spread. The spectrum includes cellulose, minerals, pig iron, heating oil and agricultural products.

Beautiful and quiet place, there are a few inland vessels and water birds to admire, and the paths are easy to navigate.
