The Hildesheim Cathedral - also called Mariendom - is one of the oldest bishop's churches in Germany. With its pure language of form, it is a special testimony to the pre-Romanesque period in Lower Saxony. Over the centuries, it has been repeatedly adapted to current tastes. During the Second World War it was badly damaged and then only restored in a simplified form.

Only when it was renovated in 2010, which was also supported by EU funds, was it largely able to regain its original shape.

The architectural history of the Mariendom dates back to the 11th century. Since 1985 the cathedral and the cathedral treasury have been part of the world cultural heritage. In 2014 it was reopened after 4.5 years of renovation.

The Hildesheim Cathedral of St. Mary's Assumption is one of the oldest bishop's churches in Germany. In terms of architectural history, it dates back to the 11th century, and its origins even date back to the year 815. In 1985, the Hildesheim Cathedral and the cathedral treasury were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List together with St. Michaelis.

The history of the origin of the cathedral even goes back to the year 815. According to legend, a reliquary miracle caused Emperor Ludwig the Pious to build a Chapel of Our Lady here. It was on this that the first cathedral was built on the site of today's cathedral courtyard in 872 by Bishop Altfrid. Around 1015, under Bishop Bernward, the cathedral was richly decorated with works of art. For the bronze "Bernward door" he had the west crypt rebuilt and a new vestibule built in the west. Under Bishop Godehard, the west end of the cathedral was demolished around 1035 and a new west wing with atrium and bell tower was built. In 1046, however, the cathedral was massively damaged by fire. Two years earlier, Bishop Azelin had already started to erect a larger new building west of the cathedral. But the new building has massive construction defects. Azelin's successor, Bishop Hezilo, therefore abandons the plan and instead has a new cathedral built on the foundations of the former AltfridDom, which was inaugurated in 1061.
