The Hildesheim Cathedral - also called Mariendom - is one of the oldest bishop's churches in Germany. Around 1015, under Bishop Bernward, the cathedral was richly decorated with works of art. For the bronze "Bernward door" he had the west crypt rebuilt and a new vestibule built in the west. Under Bishop Godehard, the west end of the cathedral was demolished around 1035 and a new west wing with atrium and bell tower was built. In 1046, however, the cathedral was massively damaged by fire. Two years earlier, Bishop Azelin had already started to erect a larger new building west of the cathedral. But the new building has massive construction defects. Azelin's successor, Bishop Hezilo, therefore abandons the plan and instead has a new cathedral built on the foundations of the former AltfridDom, which was inaugurated in 1061.
