Herman Vanspringel is the great pride of Grobbendonk. He is a great cycling legend who had a distinguished career from 1965 to 1981. He took part in many important stages but was nicknamed Monsieur Bordeaux-Paris for his seven victories in the monster stage of Bordeaux-Paris.

Rik Van Looy and Herman Vanspringel rode together for professional cyclists from 1965 to 1969. For Van Looy, ten years his senior, these were the last years of his career, while Vanspringel was just sticking his nose to the window. They are now both honorary citizens of Grobbendonk and were honored with a bronze bust. The Emperor of Herentals and Monsieur Bordeaux-Paris are thus permanently and emphatically present in the street scene in a municipality that loves the course.

Herman Vanspringel grew up in Oevel, where his parents owned a farm.[1] He was the eighth of ten children. Later the family moved to Grobbendonk, where he went to school until he was fourteen. It was only later that he became interested in cycling: he got a racing bike and soon won a few small, local races with it. Then his career as a cyclist started.

After his career he became a salesman. He continued to do this job until he retired at age 65.

Herman Vanspringel had three daughters and also had a son who died at the age of 18.

Three times a week he went cycling on the Netedijk between Bouwel and Duffel. He also regularly cycled with Eddy Merckx.

He died at home at the age of 79 after a long illness
