The origin of Grobbendonk was located at this location, just north of the current center. It was originally called Ouwen and was a Frankish settlement that may have originated on the base of the Roman vicus that was located here.

Here, on a Merovingian cemetery, a wooden church was founded (of about 800) and in the 11th and 12th centuries also a stone Romanesque church. Remains of both churches were found in 1957.

Later a Gothic church was built here, which was demolished in 1721 because from 1718 church services were held in the chapel of the almshouse.

Due to the religious-historical character of this place, a small chapel was built here in 1869.
The chapel is dedicated to Our Lady and has a polychromed statue of Mary from the time the chapel was built.

The cradle of the municipality of Grobbendonk, originally called Ouwen, was located in the hamlet of Boshoven, in the north of the municipality. In 1957, the remains of a Romanesque three-aisled church with square choir, very important to the Kempen, were found near the site of the current chapel, as well as the remains of the very first church of Ouwen, a pre-Romanesque church of wood or clay; below, traces of a Merovingian burial ground were also found.
