In 1442 a monastery called Maria Wijngaard was founded here for the canons of Augustine. A chapel was built near this monastery in 1539. In 1797 this monastery was closed and the chapel was demolished in 1836. In 1843 the monastery was occupied by the Birgittines from Uden. In 1876 it became a cloister. In 2006 some new foreign sisters came to live in the monastery, but they were not contemplative final sisters. The monastery then took on a more open character.
There is a long facade on the street. Here is the chapel from 1843 with ridge turret and pointed arch windows. There is also the entrance gate, with a baroque frame. A statue of the Holy Birgitta is placed in a niche.
The complex consists of a number of buildings grouped around a courtyard. Some 18th-century and possibly 17th-century building components are still present.
You can also stay here for an overnight stay. they have a monastery church where they make delicious refreshments and, among other things, great limonchello. Products/bookings can be ordered via their site: birgittinessen.nl/gastenhuis

The origins of this convent date back to 1442. After the sisters were expelled from the convent by the French in 1797, the convent was sold at public auction and converted into residential buildings. In 1843, it became an abbey again, this time for the Bridgettine Sisters, the "Sisters of Maasstraat."

The current building of Maria Hart Abbey originally consisted of six houses and was converted into the current convent in several phases (1843, 1850, and 1856). In 1856, the chapel with its Gothic windows was built, and it became a cloistered convent. Until then, the Bridgettine Sisters had made a significant contribution to Weert society, including the establishment of a civic school and a school for the poor.
