1056 a church is mentioned in Weert. In 1456 the preserved Gothic choir was completed. Around 1500 the old nave was demolished in order to build today's three-nave Gothic hall church. The consecration took place in 1512. In 1528 the construction of the tower began. At the end of the 16th century work was stopped due to lack of funds. The steeple received a degree in 1887. This fell in 1940 and damaged the nave. In 1960 a new spire was completed, similar to that of the Eusebiuskerk in Arnhem and by the same architect.
